About Me
I have had many varied work experiences in my past, in the corporate and IT worlds. None of this prepared me for birthing. When I was facing giving birth for the first time, it felt like I was facing a black abyss, I couldn't imagine any part of it, giving birth or who I would be after I had given birth.
I had an amazing experiencing birthing my twin boys and immediately afterwards felt a rightness with the world. I feel lucky that during the birth of my babies, I found my authority, I knew what I needed and what I didn't need, I stood up for myself when I needed to, I went past the point of impossibility, and through the pain and I did it! I was awed. Afterwards, I felt like I had finally become a woman at 34 years old. To me this is the rite of passage of birth.
I started back at work part time when Loki and Gabriel were about 5 months old. And a few months after that I was shocked to find I still had a need to find what I was meant to do in life. I thought the full, amazing, overwhelming role of mother would annihilate the desire for finding my life’s purpose. But I just couldn’t do the corporate thing any more.
This need was bubbling away within me, when my pregnant friend, asked me to come to her Belly Casting with her Doula. The Doula was Denise Love, she conducted the belly cast in a simple but ritualistic way, it was beautiful, she asked me about the birth of my babies, and we talked about birthing, and how it should be women and sisters sitting around talking like this. I thought, “I can’t imagine anything I would rather do than hang out with pregnant women and be at births”
That started me on a journey that has changed my whole life. I started doula training the next week and started attending births a few months later. I have continued to study, learn, grow and be amazed about birth. I gave birth to my daughter Aurora at home in the water, just as I dreamed, a year later.
I completed the advanced doula training – to become a childbirth educator and have since assisted on numerous women’s retreats, spiritual midwifery trainings, HypnoChildbirth trainings, doula trainings, bodywork for birth training and now co-teach the Dial a Doula training as well as birth classes and of course attending births.
My passion keeps growing as I keep learning more and keep deepening my understanding about birth and the profound impact it has on our whole lives.
